High voltage synchronous rectifier step-down MOSFET driver

Technology Cover
Nach Datum: 2023-01-02, Renesas Electronics America

The ISL6207 is a high-frequency dual MOSFET driver optimized for driving two n-channel power MosFets in mobile computing applications with a synchronous recirculating buck converter topology. This driver is combined with Intersil multiphase Buck PWM controllers such as ISL6223, ISL6215 and ISL6216 to form a complete single-stage core voltage regulator solution for advanced mobile microprocessors.

Block Diagram

The ISL6207 has the sinking current typical of 4A descending grid drivers. 4A typical convergence current is able to hold down the MOSFET gate during the phase node's rising edge to prevent the loss of emitter power due to the high dv/dt of the phase node. The operating voltage matches the 30V breakdown voltage of MOSFETs commonly used in mobile computer power supplies. The ISL6207 also has a three-state PWM input, which works with most Intersil multiphase PWM controllers and will prevent the output voltage from experiencing a negative transient when the output is turned off.

Typical Application

This feature eliminates Schottky diodes, commonly used in microprocessor power systems to protect microprocessors from reverse output voltage damage. The ISL6207 has the ability to effectively switch power mosFeTs at frequencies up to 2MHz. Each driver is capable of driving 3000pF loads with propagation delay of 15ns and transition time of less than 10ns.

The product enables bootstrating at the upper gate via an internally guided Schottky diode, reducing implementation costs and complexity and allowing the use of higher-performing, cost-effective N-channel MosFeTs. Adaptive penetration protection is integrated to prevent two MOSFeTs from conducting simultaneously
