Microchip introduced radiation-resistant power management devices for space applications in low Earth orbit

   The commercialization of low Earth orbit (LEO, below an altitude of about 1,200 miles) is transforming space exploration and satellite communications. For a satellite to operate successfully and reach its intended orbit, components that can withstand the harsh environment of space must be selected. Building on its existing portfolio of radiation-resistant products, Microchip Technology announced the launch of the first Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) radiation-resistant power device, MIC69303RT 3A Low-voltage Difference (LDO) voltage regulator.


     The MIC69303RT is a new high-current, low-voltage power management solution designed for low-earth orbit and other space applications. The new devices provide prototype samples of plastics and sealing ceramics to meet different mission requirements.


     The MIC69303RT is based on mature COTS components, making it easier for initial evaluation and early development. The device supports a single low-voltage power supply of 1.65 to 5.5V, providing output voltages as low as 0.5 volts under large currents, high accuracy and ultra-low differential voltage of 500 millivolts under extreme conditions. MIC69303RT is a power supply solution for Microchip radiation-resistant aerospace class Microcontroller (such as SAM71Q21RT) and PolarFire® FPGA (including RTPF500TLS).


    "The MIC69303RT is Microchip's first radiation-resistant power management device with a sealed ceramic package, latch immunity, and 50 Krad total radiation dose robustness," said Bob Vampola, vice president of Microchip's Aerospace and Defense business unit. Microchip has more than 60 years of history in space vehicles, and a comprehensive product portfolio enables customers to select products that complement each other and speed up the design process."

Customers can choose COTS MIC69303RT aerospace class components to power Microchip aerospace class MCU and FPGA, and design its space system with confidence."


   The MIC69303RT is designed for demanding aerospace applications and can operate in temperatures ranging from -55°C to +125°C. The device is available in 8-pin and 10-pin package configurations with radiation resistance of up to 50 Krad. Low noise output is critical for sensitive RF circuits, post-regulated switching power supplies, and industrial power applications.


     MIC69303RT devices are Microchip's latest aerospace grade products, manufactured to meet the following MIL Q or V requirements: screening test, compliance test, and TCI/QCI specification. The plastic MIC69303RT meets the high reliability plastic quality derived from the AEC-Q100 automotive specifications and has undergone the specific additional tests required for space applications.
