Toshiba Electronics Components and Memory announced the launch of the "TB9083FTG" grid drive IC for automotive brushless DC motors for electric power steering (EPS), electric braking systems, and drive-by-wire shift systems. For systems that require safety relays such as EPS, TB9083FTG has a built-in 3-channel grid drive to control and drive the safety relays of the motor and power supply. This eliminates the need for external components and helps reduce the number of parts

On-board equipment must be capable of providing relevant performance as required by ISO 26262 Functional Safety standards for road vehicles. Semiconductor chips and electronic components used in vehicle equipment are no exception. TB9083FTG controls and drives an external n-channel power MOSFET used to drive a 3-phase brushless DC motor.

It is ideally suited to meet the requirements of ISO 26262 Functional Safety Standard 2nd Edition and supports ASIL-D for high safety level on-board systems. As a result, the new products are ideal for on-board applications using brushless DC motors, such as EPS, electric braking and drive-by-wire gear shifting systems.

The TB9083FTG is packaged in P-VQFN48-0707-0.50-005 with solderable flanking. The package facilitates visual inspection of solder joints using an automated optical inspection (AOI) system and helps improve solder joint reliability. In addition, Toshiba has verified that it can withstand 3000 cycles in the mount temperature cycle test and obtained relevant data, so that customers can use the QFN package with complete confidence.

By using a small package (7.0mm×7.0mm (typical value)), the mounting area of TB9083FTG was reduced by approximately 66% compared to existing products. This helps control the mount area and provides a redundant design that effectively ensures a higher level of safety as the number of electronic components on the ECU board increases.
